We are now looking for a GLOBAL DATA PRIVACY MANAGER to join our MARINE LEGAL & COMPLIANCE team.


The location for this position is preferably in Helsinki, Finland, but other major European Wärtsilä Marine Business locations can be considered. Hybrid working is possible.


The Opportunity


The importance and profile of data protection and privacy has never been higher - this role is vital to demonstrate and deliver our commitment to the protection of the personal data of customers and others who engage with us. In this global position the successful candidate will have the opportunity to work across a number of teams and different levels of the organisation, helping to raise standards and shape best practices which will play an important part in enabling our Marine Businesses to achieve their goals. A particular area of focus will be ensuring robust governance standards in the context our cutting-edge digital technologies, in order to mitigate risks of data breaches and ensure that our customers and other stakeholders have trust in the integrity and security of our solutions and systems.


The role will report to the Managing Counsel, Tech Law in Marine Legal & Compliance, in a friendly, supportive, diverse and high-performing international team supporting the Marine business, and will also work closely with key contacts across the organisation, including the Group Data Protection Team, Global Data Privacy Manager Energy and other data privacy related colleagues, Marine Legal & Compliance Team and relevant Marine Businesses’ team members.

Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities


  • Manage each Marine Business data privacyactivities in line with Wärtsilä Group level data protection requirements, including guidelines, tools and processes.
  • Scope data privacyrequirements for the Marine Businesses and update, implement and maintain the Marine Data Privacy action plan
  • Assist in evaluating and managing data privacy risks in collaboration with Marine businessa and Group Data Protection
  • Establish and roll out data privacy procedures, guidelines, awareness and best practices
  • Lead and maintain data privacy networks and communities such as the Marine Privacy Champions network
  • Respond to live data protection issues including any data breaches, lead and support the Wärtsilä data breach response process
  • Support Marine Businesses in monitoring, controlling and reporting data protection matters.
  • Identify data privacy criticality and roll out Privacy by Design for Marine Businesses’ digital products and services that process personal data.
  • Work alongside product, engineering and business teams to support data protection compliance such as implementing Privacy by Design and administering privacy impact assessments.
  • Support other teams such as sourcing/procurement and legal with establishing data protection requirements.
  • Facilitate collaboration between Marine Businesses and Group data protection teams and foster interactive collaboration with the entire data privacy community in Wärtsilä, including the global data protection network of Wärtsilä’s subsidiaries
  • Develop and maintain up to date knowledge of GDPR and other applicable data protection regulations, track emerging issues and find useful ways to educate and raise awareness effectively in the organisation.
  • Act as a subject matter expert and go-to advisor for the Marine Businesses on matters involving personal data.

Experience and Qualifications


  • Strong experience and knowledge of compliance with GDPR and other applicable data protection legislation is necessary.
  • Experience as a data protection/privacy practitioner preferred, but experience in legal, compliance, audit, quality, information security and/or risk functions would also be considered.
  • Candidates with relevant data protection or privacy certification (CIPP/E, CIPM, CIPT) would be preferred.

  • Identifying ways to simplify the approach and message to enhance engagement and optimise efficiency.
  • Commitment to continuous development and improvement.
